It’s All In Your Mind–3 Days, 3 Quotes Challenge: Day 1

I’ve been nominated by Emma at Wandering Words for the 3 Days, 3 Quotes Challenge! Thanks for the nomination–I’m really excited about this, as it is my first blogging challenge ever! First, the rules:

The Three Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Post a quote for three consecutive days (one quote per day).
  3. Nominate three new bloggers each day!

The quote I’ve chosen for Day One is from Book One of Paradise Lost, the 17th-century epic poem by John Milton:

“The mind is its own place, and in itself

Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.”

Paradise Lost is not typically considered gothic, but it is one of my all-time favorite books and it features one of the most interesting anti-heroes in literature. The lines above are spoken by the character of Satan as he adjusts himself to his new abode in Hell. Though he is the villain of the story, Satan has some of the most thought-provoking lines. This quote especially speaks to me, since it emphasizes the power of the mind. Your attitude can have a huge effect on how you view the world around you—I try to keep this in mind every day and remind myself to think positively. While I don’t generally advise modelling your behavior after Satan’s, his commitment to a positive attitude in this scene, especially right after being flung from Heaven and landing in a lake of fire, is quite remarkable.

My Nominations:

  1. Harper @ Harper Honey
  2. Veronica @ Veronica Varlow’s Danger Diary
  3. Carly, Kayla, and whoever else wants to join @ The Daily Geekette

As for the rest of you, feel free to share some of your favorite quotes in the comments. Or, if you have your own blog and want to be nominated for the challenge, let me know—I’ve still got two more days of this!

  1. I was thinking of doing the Dumbledore quote “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” for mine, but now I think that is too similar to yours. I’ll find something else.

    1. I hate it when Dumbledore is just too similar to Satan…
That one’s a little overdone, anyway. I’m sure you can come up with something that might be more new and exciting to people.
