As of today, it has been exactly six months since I first launched this blog. Can you believe it? It seems like only a few weeks have gone by to me. I’d been dreaming of starting a blog forever, but back in June I could hardly imagine finding the time and inspiration to write once a week. I decided to plunge in anyway, and it’s all worked out so far!
I wrote some of my best stuff in my early days, since I had plenty of time to contemplate topics and save up the good ones. Since many of you are new to my blog, don’t forget to go back and look at some of my old posts! In honor of my six-monthiversary, I’ve rounded up six of my favorite posts that I’ve written since beginning my blog:
1. Darker Still Review–A Modern Gaslamp Fantasy
This was my very first book review, and this book is still one of my favorite things I’ve read this year. Leanna Renee Hieber is an absolutely amazing writer and human being, and I cannot wait to review more of her books. She was also sweet enough to say some really nice things about this review on social media back when my blog was brand new and nobody read it.
Vampire literature is one of my favorite types of literature, and I’ve been working on building (and reading through) a list of the central works of this genre for years. I had a lot of fun writing this one, and I hope to do similar “canon” posts for other creatures and subgenres in the future.
3. The Roots of Gothic Literature
This post is, I think, the most important one for newbies to this site or to this genre. This is the post where I explain what it’s all about, where it all came from. I spend a lot of time on this site talking about the classic Gothic novels or relating other things back to them. So if you’re not familiar with the origins of the Gothic genre, check out this post!
4. Gothic Tropes: The Unreliable Narrator
One of my more academic posts, this is nonetheless one of my favorites. I really enjoy learning about recurring features that define a genre, and I’m hoping to make Gothic Tropes a recurring series on this blog.
Does this one even need an explanation? Ever since I started building up this shelf, I keep looking for things to add to it. I’ll probably do a Part 2 of this post eventually.
6. Literary Influences on The Nightmare Before Christmas
Last but not least is one I wrote only a few weeks ago in preparation for Halloween. I always love finding allusions to literature in the things I watch and read.
